Home / Travel journal / Balabac for families
Balabac can be a wonderful family trip, but it is not a resort holiday and we will not pretend otherwise. Here is what to weigh up honestly before you bring children.
What makes it work for families
- A private boat, so children are never on an overloaded public crossing
- Shallow, calm water at stops like Canimeran for less confident swimmers
- A stop at Onok Island, the highlight for most children
- Home-cooked meals included, so no hunting for restaurants
- Our local campsites with the same crew throughout the trip
What makes it hard
- A 2:00 AM pickup in Puerto Princesa and a six-hour van transfer
- Sleeping in a tent on a beach, with shared toilets and a bucket shower
- Heat, sand and salt water for several days at a stretch
- No mobile signal at camp, and no hospital on the islands
- There is no mains power between 10 PM and 6 PM the next day
Tell us about your family first
Before you book, tell us the ages of everyone travelling, whether anyone is a weak swimmer, and any health or mobility considerations. We would rather advise you honestly up front than have a difficult day on the water. Some families are a perfect fit for this trip and some are not, and we will say so.
Practical suggestions
- Consider the 3-day Essential Balabac for younger families - shorter, but still includes Onok Island
- Ask about the hut upgrade if you would rather not sleep in a tent
- Bring more than one swimsuit per child and plenty of reef-safe sunscreen
- Bring a headlamp each - the camp is dark after 10 PM
- Prepare children for being offline, and bring cards or books
Questions travellers ask
Is there a minimum age for Balabac tours?
Tell us the ages of your group and we will advise honestly on whether the trip suits you. That conversation happens before booking, not after.
Is the boat safe for children?
We use a private, roofed boat with a licensed captain and Coast Guard clearance on every trip. Life jackets are part of the safety briefing.
Which tour should a family take?
The 3-day Essential Balabac is often the better fit for younger families, and it still includes the Onok Island stop.
Can we get a hut instead of a tent?
Yes, a hut upgrade is available at the campsite. Ask when you book.
Ask us about your family
Tell us the ages in your group and we will give you a straight answer about whether Balabac is right for you.
