Home / Travel journal / Mansalangan in the best light

A sandbar is a temporary thing. Mansalangan is widest around low tide and narrows as the water rises, so the difference between a good visit and a great one is timing, not equipment.

Timing beats gear

Arrive at the wrong end of the tide and you will find a thin strip of sand with water either side. Arrive near low tide and you walk a wide white road through shallow turquoise water. Your guide times the stop using the tide table for the day.

When we reach it

Mansalangan is an 8:00 AM stop on day three of the 4-day Balabac Expedition, after breakfast at camp. That early slot is deliberate: the light is still soft, the sand is not yet hot, and we are ahead of other boats.
